Wind Ensemble to perform renowned composers’ works
May 13, 2013
The Wind Ensemble's spring concert will take place Sat., May 18 at 8:15 p.m. in Hole Memorial Auditorium. Admission is free.
The repertoire will start off with Sousa's “Power and Glory,” composed in 1923 by the prolific writer of American patriotic and military music who rightly earned the nickname, “The March King.”
The program will continue with works by Steven Bryant, Brian Balmages, Danny Elfman, Jack Stamp, and will feature an arrangement by Juan Diaz of the traditional tune, “He's Got the Whole World” with La Sierra vocalists Susanna Lieva and Allison Chang.
The group will also perform “Selections from Les Miserables” by Schonberg and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer. Schonberg, originally a record producer and singer, branched into composition of musicals including a production of “Les Miserables” jointly conceived with Alain Boublil, and which debuted in Paris in 1980. A Broadway production of the show landed eight Tony Awards in 1987. Schonberg's extensive accomplishments include an Academy Award nomination this year in the Best Original Song category for the composition, “Suddenly,” from the 2012 film version of “Les Miserables.” Schonberg wrote the music with lyrics by Kretzmer and Boublil.
The Wind Ensemble will wrap up its presentation with a performance of “Midway March” by Academy Award winning film composer Williams who wrote the piece for the 1976 World War II-era feature film “Midway” starring Charlton Heston and Henry Fonda.
The 45-member Wind Ensemble has attracted widespread attention under the direction of Ken Narducci, director of wind and percussion studies. In March the group performed an invitational gala concert during the 34th Annual Dr. Lawrence R. Sutherland Wind Festival at California State University, Fresno. In March 2010 the ensemble landed a coveted invitational spot performing a full concert during the College Band Directors National Association's West/Northwest Conference in Reno, Nev.
