Wind Ensemble to perform “Songs and Dances,” showcase saxophonist Harrison

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The La Sierra University Wind Ensemble under Director Giovanni Santos will present a fall concert featuring the works of seven noted composers and award-winning alto saxophonist Andrew Harrison.

The ensemble’s performance on Sat., Nov. 10 is  titled “Songs and Dances” and will open with “Caprice on Danish and Russian Aires, Op.79” by Camille Saint-Saens. The piece will highlight music students Isabel Serrano, flute, Daniel Ramirez, clarinet, Alessandra Ramos, oboe, and Thomas Kim on piano. 

The evening’s wide-ranging repertoire will include “Second Suite in F” by Gustav Holst, “Song for Lindsay” by Andrew Boysen, Jr., “Spanish Dance” by Andrew Wainwright, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” by Steven Rouse, and “Galop” by Dmitri Shostakovich. 

The Wind Ensemble’s performance of “Mobius Trip, Concerto for Alto Saxophone” by James M. Stephenson will showcase Harrison. He is an international performing and recording artist, a faculty member with the Mt. San Antonio College, and former faculty member with the French Conservatory of Music in Beverly Hills and the Colburn School in Los Angeles. 

Harrison holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music. He has performed hundreds of concerts throughout the United States and Europe, performed on several albums, and premiered more than 30 works by emerging and eminent composers. He is artistic director of saxophone quartet TC4, and has won numerous prizes in some of the nation’s most prestigious competitions including the Frances Walton Young Artist Competition, MTNA Chamber Music Competitions, and the US “Pershing’s Own” Collegiate Concerto Competition.

The Wind Ensemble “Songs and Dances” concert will take place at Hole Memorial Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 seniors ages 55 and over, and $3 for students.
