Education:

  • B.S. in Physics, Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI (1991)
  • M.S. in Physics, University of California-Riverside, Riverside, CA (1993)
  • Ph.D. Physics, University of California-Riverside, Riverside, CA (1998)

Principal Research Interests

Dr. Case’s general research interest is in high energy astrophysics.  He spent 14 years working as a postdoctoral researcher and research scientist at Louisiana State University and Southern University, Baton Rouge, working on various projects in cosmic ray physics, x-ray astronomy, and gamma-ray astronomy.  Instruments he designed and built have been tested at the CERN high-energy physics accelerator lab in Geneva, Switzerland and on high-altitude balloons in Antarctica.  Currently, he is part of a team using the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) on the Fermi satellite to monitor the sources of gamma-rays in the sky.  Using GBM, he is conducting in-depth studies of the galactic black hole Cygnus X-1 in order to determine the physical mechanisms responsible for the low energy gamma-ray emission.  He also is part of an international consortium that develops the standards for cross-calibrating instruments on the various x-ray and gamma-ray satellites.
