Parent Center, Corona Norco Unified School District

The Student and Family Support Services Department supports families within the Corona Norco Unified School district in a variety of areas including community resources, mental health, counseling, and parent education. With limited resources to meet the needs of such a large school district interns help families and link them to services. As an intern, Ilene has the opportunity to provide resources to families in crises and link them to community agencies; assist with support groups for parents and/or children; become more acquainted with the needs of the community and develop plans to help families in a variety of unique situations; work with families whose children are chronically absent and/or have engaged in delinquent behaviors; and link families to mental health resources and support groups.

MFI Recovery

MFI (My Family Inc.) Recovery Center is dedicated to providing high-quality, affordable substance abuse treatment programs, mental health services, and primary health care for women, men, and adolescents. MFI Recovery Center provides residential and outpatient treatment programs at facilities located  around Southern California’s Inland Empire. As an intern, Maureen is able to shadow and partner with multidisciplinary teams providing support for comprehensive substance abuse treatment and behavioral health services to clients. She will shadow and assist with parenting classes, relapse-prevention therapy groups, and mental health care for depression, anxiety, trauma, and other conditions that help ensure whole-person care leading to long-term recovery.

Chino Valley Community Health Center, Health Service Alliance

Health Service Alliance operates several Community Health Centers in San Bernardino County. Their programs provide comprehensive and integrated primary medical, dental, mental health, and substance abuse treatment services to low-income residents in southwest San Bernardino County. As an intern Melissa provides case management services to clients, shadows clinicians, and participates in macro level community involvement.

Children Services Division, Riverside County Department of Public Social Services

Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS), Children's Services Division (CSD) protects children and youth from abuse and neglect and partners with families, young adults, and communities to build safety, permanency, and well-being. As an intern, Khadeejah carries her own cases throughout the internship. In addition, she connects with various county offices to help families mitigate their circumstances by offering services that meet the unique needs of each family.

Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy

Young Visionaries Youth Leadership Academy’s vision is to provide the tools necessary to succeed, deliver innovative programs, services, and resources, that help guide youth & young adults into making positive life choices while building a healthier community. They offer a wraparound delivery service approach (both short-term and long-term) which allows youth & young adults who are experiencing multiple challenges to receive personalized collaborated support and establish a strength-based relationship, which will increase retention, resiliency, and completion rates (positive outcomes). As an intern, Dominique work individually with youth providing crisis intervention services and brief mental health counseling.

Alejandra Jackson
Inland SoCal Crisis Helpline (951-686-HELP): A project of Inland SoCal United Way

Inland Southern California United Way’s mission is to unite people, ideas, and resources to empower our community and improve lives. After receiving evidence-based crisis intervention and suicide prevention training, Alejandra provides telephonic emotional support, crisis intervention and suicide prevention. In addition to the telephonic crisis counseling, as a social work intern, she assists with suicide prevention presentations in the community. Alejandra provides help, hope and increases safety with each client who calls 951-686-HELP, a 55 year old suicide hotline.

Tatiana Cordova-Glaze
S.A.F.E. Family Justice Center, District Attorney’s Office, Riverside County Division of Victim Services

The primary populations served at the Family Justice Center (FJC) include victims of domestic violence, child abuse, elder or dependent abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. The FJC provides access to law enforcement to report crimes or conduct interviews, and District Attorney personnel assistance with victims’ rights information and advocacy. Clients have access to clinical therapy, educational groups, Kids Court curriculum, and youth mentorship/programming. As an BSW intern, Tati assists with restraining orders, providing moral support, emergency assistance, safety planning, crisis intervention, orienting victims to the criminal justice system and referring victims to needed resources. In addition, she conducts victim intakes and needs assessments, provides community outreach presentations, attends court hearings of clients, and assists with various administrative duties within the Family Justice Center.

Jerry Vasquez
Olive Crest Transitional Housing Program

Olive Crest is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing child abuse by uniting individuals and families in need with community churches and organizations that are invested in ensuring every family is supported and equipped for success. Their model of strengthening, equipping, and restoring children in crisis has proven to be extremely effective in stopping the cycle of abuse and neglect and empowering strong families to become healthy and productive in their communities. As an intern, Jerry will shadow social workers then have the opportunity to serve as a case manager for two clients, ages 18&20, who has aged out of foster care or probation. He will also fill a role that combines traditional case management and collaborative goal setting with coaching, training in life skills, and at times, tangible assistance (help with shopping, help with the DMV, help with homework, help with maintaining their apartment.)

Patton State Hospital

Patton State Hospital (PSH) provides in-patient treatment to over 1,500 patients, ages 17-91, who exhibit a wide range of severe mental disorders. PSH is the largest maximum-security forensic hospital in the nation that houses male and female criminally insane patients. The hospital’s mission is to provide comprehensive clinical services within the context of a biopsychosocial rehabilitation model in an environment of safety and security for all patients, staff and the community in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. The objective of Patton State Hospital is to emphasize the potential for each patient to learn new skills, develop adaptive coping mechanisms to enhance the quality of the patient’s life while at the hospital and prepare them for Community Outpatient Treatment, and to design specialized treatment plans to help patients gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be competent in court. As an intern, Claire engages with patients by assisting in the in-take process, monitoring on-going assessments, ensuring the completion of advanced directives, teaching psycho-educational courses, and co-facilitating groups.
