State Sen. Richard Roth will give a talk at the Zapara School of Business, Troesh Conference Center.

Roth’s talk for a student colloquium is open to the public and begins at 5 p.m. in the Troesh Conference Center. He will delve into issues impacted by rapid changes in technology, particularly the on-demand or shared economy created by digital marketplaces where such companies as Uber, Lyft, Amazon Prime and others specialize in fulfilling consumer demand through immediate and convenient access to goods and services. Roth will discuss ways to balance the positive effects of the on-demand economy with its unintended consequences and impacts on others.

Roth, an attorney and retired major general with the U.S. Air Force, represents the 31st Senate District comprised of portions of Riverside County and the communities of Corona, Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, March Air Reserve Base, Moreno Valley, Norco, Perris and Riverside. Prior to his election to the state Senate in November 2012, Roth served as an attorney with the National Labor Relations Board in Los Angeles, and later served as a labor and employment law attorney with Riverside-based firms for more than 30 years. He retired in 2007 from 32 years of military service with the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corp, in active duty and as a reservist. He is the recipient of numerous military awards and decorations including the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.

Roth’s legislative tasks include chairing the Senate Budget Subcommittee on State Administration and General Government, and chairing the Senate Insurance Committee. On July 16, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León appointed Roth to the California Law Revision Commission which is responsible for examining the common law, statutes, and judicial decisions of California for the purpose of discovering defects and anachronisms in the law and recommending needed reforms.
