La Sierra University tied for 57th place along with three other schools on the news organization’s list of 89 Best Regional Universities in 15 western states. The ranking is one of a number of lists released today by U.S. News for its 2016 Best Colleges report.

“We are very pleased with the recognition given La Sierra University by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges lists. It is always encouraging to have the excellent work of our faculty, staff and alumni honored in such a manner,” said university President Randal Wisbey. “Such affirmation serves as a platform from which we can grow and reach new heights in our service to our students, our community and our world.”

U.S. News ranked a total of 618 regional universities divided into four areas -- North, South, Midwest and West. The institutions offer a full range of undergraduate degrees and master’s programs, but few doctoral degrees and as such are ranked against their peer groups rather than nationally. “In general, they tend to draw students most heavily from surrounding states,” the news organization stated.

The Best Regional Universities in the West listed only one other Seventh-day Adventist school, Walla Walla University in Washington. Trinity University in Texas placed first on the list. Other SDA schools placed on lists for Best Regional Colleges and Best National Universities.

U.S. News & World Report bases its rankings of colleges and universities within each category on a composite weighted score derived from weighted scores in several areas—graduation and retention rates, peer assessment, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, graduation rate performance, and alumni giving. The 2016 Best Colleges report provides rankings data on nearly 1,800 schools around the country. The U.S. News ranking falls on the heels of La Sierra’s high placement in Money Magazine’s Best Colleges lists published in July. The university ranked eighth in the nation on a list of 50 universities and colleges around the country lauded by the magazine for adding the most value to students’ education by helping them exceed expectations.
