Benefits for Employees

At La Sierra University, we understand that benefits play an important role in the lives of our faculty and staff members and their families.

The following is a general outline of employee benefits. Some benefits may vary according to employment status. Contact the Human Resources Office for more information.

We provide an outstanding package of health and life benefits for employees, with coverage available for their families. We offer medical, dental and vision coverage, as well as basic and supplemental life, long term disability, and flexible spending accounts.

Once you have completed your probationary period, you are eligible to participate in the Plan.

Flexible Spending Accounts

This benefit allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars, reducing your taxable income, for non-reimbursable medical or dependent care expenses.

Accident Insurance

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance by payroll deductions.

Cancer Insurance

Offered through by payroll deductions through bswift.

Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, Accident Insurance

Benefits are paid directly to employee, regardless of any other insurance. Each policy can be purchased by Payroll Deductions.

Disability Policies

Short Term Disability (STD): All employees pay into one of two plans.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

  • Income provided during extended period of illness or injury.
Identity Protection

Identity theft, personal computer security, cyber protection.

Legal Resources

Comprehensive legal coverage, services, and expertise.

Life Insurance

Basic: Voya - Cash payments to surviving spouse, children or to employee in the event of death. 

  • Employees: $10,000, Spouses: $50,000, Dependents: $10,000

SupplementalVoya: Additional life insurance by payroll deduction.

    Pet Insurance

    Customizable plan for cats and dogs, 24/7 helpline.

      Defined Benefit Plan

      For those with denominational service prior to January 1, 2000. Frozen as December 31, 1999.

      Defined Contribution Plan

      Employer Contribution of 5%. Employee has option to contribute as well with employer matching up to established limit.
      Secure Foundations Retirement Option

      Tax Sheltered Annuity (TSA Contributions)

      Savings set aside for retirement by pre-tax deduction.

      Dependent Tuition Assistance 

      Full Time Employees :

      • For SDA Institutions: 35% for commuter students; 70% for dorm students on tuition and fees.
      • For La Sierra University: 100% of tuition and fees will be covered after all other aid
      Free Tuition

      Full Time Employees: 18 units per year for employee; 18 units per year for spouse.

      Credit Union

      Membership to: La Loma Federal Credit Union.

      Family Care & Medical Leave

      After 12 months of employment, eligible up to 12 weeks off for the birth/adoption of child, care of a sick child, spouse, parent or personal illness.

      Bereavement Leave

      Five days off from work with pay following the death of the employee's immediate family member.

      Holidays

      Ten scheduled days.

      Housing Assistance

      For eligible faculty and salaried employees, duplicate housing assistance, as well as housing assistance for purchase of home.

      Moving Assistance

      For eligible faculty and salaried employees, relocation and travel allowance for incoming employees.

      Military/Reserve

      Time off for military service.

      Jury Duty

      Up to 10 days (per calendar year) if called to serve.

      Sick Leave
      • For eligible salaried employees 2 weeks per year.
      • For eligible hourly employees have an accrual of .038462 per hour worked.
      Social Security

      Deductions are paid into the United States Social Security Administration. (Ministers excluded).

      Workers Compensation

      Medical benefits and income provided during work related illness or injury.
