Stay in California or return home. Those were the choices given on Friday, March 13th, that many residents had to make.

New York is home during COVID-19

Returning home for me seemed like the only option, but the scary part was that home was/is New York—the state responsible for most of the cases of COVID-19 in the US. My father emphasized that when I returned I had to stay home and not even think about leaving my house. I made a deal with him that if I did return home I would like to go back to work as an EMT. Being an EMT in the state with the most cases is scary but also a blessing. It’s where I’ve been able to lend a helping hand to those that are just as nervous as me. The loud, fast-paced behavior of NY streets has moved from the outside to the inside of hospitals. I knew COVID-19 was a real and present thing, but it wasn’t until April 2nd that it hit home when I received the news that my aunt had passed away from it. I was able to experience what I had been seeing and hearing about, which was the same thing that others are currently going through. Death has become common, sadness has become present, anxiety has become prevalent, and the unknown is my new reality. Comfort is found knowing that God knows my unknown, he’s in control of my sadness and anxiety, and most of all, he escaped death.
