First Zoom meeting with La Sierra faculty and music majors! So lovely to see everyone! Getting set to start classes next week. Stay healthy everyone!

The following is an excerpt from a message Professor Anderson is sharing with music students and faculty:

Music Office Communication

  • All incoming calls will receive a voicemail message instructing them that we ARE still operational, but due to the closure of campus, callers should contact us via email (music@lasierra.edu ) and should visit the department website for more information.
  • Student workers, under supervision of the music office manager will be on call for incoming emails at scheduled times, while simultaneously working on specific assignments, such as program training, producing promotional/marketing material, and archival work, etc. Our office manager will be in charge of organizing these specific assignments.

Special Projects

  • Student office workers will have special projects related to planning for our future performance season. Some faculty may also have need of this type of research assistance and planning. All assignments should be approved by department chair and organized through the music office manager.

Department Chair

  • The department chair will hold regular office hours and will be available via phone, text, or email. Appointments for meeting can be scheduled in advance and will be conducted online. Please email danderso1@lasierra.edu for any meeting requests.

Student Advisement

  • Please make arrangements with your teacher during their scheduled office hours.
  • The department chair will be setting appointments individually with each music major throughout the quarter to make sure that academic planning is on track.

General Assembly

  • We will have a general department meeting on Zoom in the middle of the quarter to touch base with everyone.

Additionally, Dr. Anderson, who is also the Director of Orchestral Studies, is planning a full quarter of study for our University orchestra. I was not sure how an orchestra could rehearse and perform if its members are not together in Hole Memorial Auditorium, but Dr. Anderson is looking forward to creatively facilitating the continued growth of our musicians’ skills:

“The La Sierra University Orchestra class will use weekly Zoom meetings to discuss score interpretation, analysis, recording assignments for each participant, and to provide live teacher/student as well as student/student feedback.

Our goal is to produce a collaborative recording project of a symphony by the end of the quarter. The orchestra will have assigned Team Leaders, students who have principal seats in their section. These Team Leaders will be assigned 2 or 3 members from their section to provide an online exchange of audio files for individual practice assignments. The goal is to accomplish the same methods of articulation unification, as well as to achieve a unified artistic concept of phrasing and interpretation that will be discussed during the live Zoom meetings. This is an exciting experiment which we believe will yield amazing results in the level of orchestra playing by the end of the term.”
