VA Education Benefit Checklist

  1. APPLY FOR VA EDUCATION BENEFITS

  2. APPLY FOR ADMISSIONS 

    • Visit lasierra.edu/apply-now to apply online.
      • Note that VA benefits are available for degree-seeking programs only. Benefits do not apply to pre-health or certificate programs.
  3. SUBMIT ALL YOUR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

    • Transcripts are to be mailed to:

      La Sierra University Admissions Office

      4500 Riverwalk Pkwy
      Riverside, CA 92505

      Official e-transcripts may be sent to admissions@lasierra.edu

    • Freshmen: Submit official high school transcripts, AP scores, and SAT/ACT scores to the address above.
    • Prior College: Submit all official college transcripts to the address above.
  4. SUBMIT THE CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY FORM

      1. The Certificate of Eligibility Form is issued by the VA via mail to the veteran.
      2. The Form indicates the education benefits for which the veteran is qualified.
  5. HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY (COE)

    • Call the VA at 888-442-4551.
    • Log into your eBenefits account.
      • Click the “Dashboard” link followed by the “Benefits” link.
      • Click on the “Education” link and then the “View Details” button. This is the VA-recognized alternative to the regular hard copy COE form. Print this page for your records.
  6. CHANGE OF PROGRAM OR PLACE OF TRAINING

    • This applies to student veterans transferring their benefits to La Sierra from another institution or to current La Sierra student veterans who are requesting to change their program.
    • Apply online to transfer VA benefits to La Sierra University at www.VA.gov.
      • Student veterans utilizing VA education benefits at a different institution who wish to transfer to La Sierra University must first apply online through the VA website.
    • Apply online to change program at www.VA.gov.
      • Student veterans must first speak with their academic advisor before changing their program. Contact the Office of Academic & Career Services (OACS) at 951-785-2452 or make an appointment online. Visit the OACS website at lasierra.edu/oacs/ for more information.
    • Submit the updated Certificate of Eligibility form to the Records Office, Attn: VA School Certifying Official (see step 4 above).
  7. ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

    • Apply online for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, also known as FAFSA.
    • Contact the Office of Student Financial Services at 951-785-2175 for more information or visit lasierra.edu/sfs/.
  8. ACTIVATE THE STUDENT PORTAL ACCOUNT, BLACKBOARD, and EMAIL

    • Visit My La Sierra at lasierra.edu.
    • Click Activate Login or Reset Password, then enter the La Sierra ID#. An email will be forwarded to the personal email address used for the admissions application process.
    • Follow the email instructions.
    • Download the Duo Mobile app on your mobile device and follow instructions to activate multi-factor authentication.
  9. REGISTER FOR CLASSES

    • Obtain advising from OACS and construct a class schedule. Access the Course Schedule to view available classes.
    • Log in at My La Sierra.
      • Click on the Registration icon on the Students home screen.
      • Select the desired term and enter CRNs for each class, then click Submit Changes.
        • Contact OACS for questions or concerns regarding overrides and prerequisites.
      • Confirmation of Registration MUST be completed after the initial registration each term or courses will be dropped at midnight.
        • Click the green Check or Confirm Registration button to be taken to the confirmation questions.
      • Once registered for ALL classes for the quarter, inform the Records Office that you want to certify for educational benefits. Please contact us at to receive the VA Certification Request Form link. We will email the link 30 days prior to the quarter beginning.
    • Registration opens on week 5 of the preceding term and closes on the first Friday of the quarter. See the Academic Calendar for specific deadlines.
