Director's Welcome

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to experience a lot of opportunities, and I owe much of it to the registrar of a small two-year college in Cisco, Texas. Despite not having a high school diploma, the registrar allowed me to enroll and complete the High School Equivalency exam (GED). This opportunity set me on the path to obtaining an associate degree at Cisco College, followed by baccalaureate degrees in Chemistry and Biology, a master's degree in biology from Tarleton State University in Texas, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of North Texas.

As Project Director, I have enjoyed promoting student success in underrepresented groups with a great team. We have done some exciting things, including bringing hydroponic container farming to campus, creating a student internship partnership with the Navy, and spearheading a sustainability park project currently under development at La Sierra University.

My experience of being given a chance to pursue my education without a high school diploma has inspired me to create opportunities for others. It is the foundation for why I have dedicated myself to leading creative initiatives that help promote student equity and success.

Please explore our web pages and learn more about our thoughtfully designed programs and resources. If you need help finding the information you're looking for, please don't hesitate to contact me or one of the Title V team members. We are here to help you discover your pathway to success through La Sierra University and beyond.

Sincerely,

Marvin A. Payne, Ph.D.
